Theme: Self-compassion

We live in a competitive culture, surrounded by constant stimulus that encourages comparison and can leave us feeling lesser than, and always aware of those who are more attractive, successful, or intelligent than us. At times we might be able to raise our self esteem and hold onto a sense of positivity about ourselves, but it tends to be short lived. Our sense of self worth is forever going up and down in relation to our latest successes or perceived failures. There is a more compelling way to move forward than the path of judgement and self criticism. Many experts suggest shifting our focus away from self-esteem towards a more effective path to happiness: self compassion. The research shows us that people who can develop self compassion towards their feelings and imperfections are able to nurture a greater sense of wellbeing than those who repeatedly judge themselves.

“Self-compassion just means applying the same standard of compassion to yourself as you already do to others.”
- Nic Wignall

Building a better relationship with ourselves starts with treating ourselves in a kinder and more respectable way. That includes taming that innner critic which thrives on giving us a hard time and keeping us stuck in that familiar negative spiral. Developing a habit of being more gentle and compassionate with yourself frees up time and energy to focus on things that allow you to feel pride in your achievements. This leads to a positive upward spiral of quietening down that inner critic and feeling much better about ourselves. Managing ourselves better can only come with an increased understanding, and it’s very hard to understand ourselves if we are often attacking ourselves. So - let’s get curious, learn to be less combative and treat ourselves as we would a good friend. A little gentleness and compassion can go a long way, especially when turned inwards.

Using empirical research, practical exercises, and drawing on the work of Dr. Kristin Neff—the world's expert on self-compassion— Bella will focus on changing and healing negative emotional patterns, and quietening that inner critical voice so that we can feel happier and healthier in our lives.

“You have to care about yourself before you can really care about other people. If you are continually judging and criticizing yourself while trying to be kind to others, you are drawing artificial boundaries and distinctions that only lead to feelings of separation and isolation….…………. By giving ourselves unconditional kindness and comfort while embracing the human experience, difficult as it is, we avoid destructive patterns of fear, negativity, and isolation. “

- Kristin Neff
